Silver Winner Ocean, Sue Goyette

Bronze Winner What Lies Across The Water, Stephen Kimber

A couple of years ago Halifax was blowing up over the renaming of Cornwallis School. Half the town thought Cornwallis’ scalp decree is the wrong message to send today’s native people, including students at the school, while the other half valued tradition. Alas, there wasn’t much in the way of information about Cornwallis himself, so Tattrie set out to write his book. “People should understand exactly what happened,” says Tattrie. “This was the violent dispossession of an entire people and their land.”
