Choose Your Destination
(indie)
Popular Halifax pop-duo The Superfantastics enjoyed an awesome and, by all accounts, busy year last year. They released Pop-up Book and toured like mad, documenting their travels on a video blog. Matt MacDonald and Stephanie d’Entremont were even shrunk down, animated and stuck in plastic cups for their ECMA-nominated video for “Tonight Tonite.” It’s amazing they had time to record their new five-song EP, Choose Your Destination.

Destination comes complete with your very own pair of cardboard 3D glasses---all the better for viewing illustrator Mike Holmes’s kitschy space-travel cover art. The EP, which will also be available as a seven-inch, maintains the Superfantastic signature charm, but the past year’s experience pays off, with more confident playing on the wonderful “Turn On Me,” a nice mix of drums and melody that will grace many playlists. “Lullaby Punches” and “Van Gogh” maintain the duo’s sweet, awkward love-story
telling---complete with oddball references to Nancy Drew and clumsy, pretentious intellectuals. “The Astronomer” takes the band in a new, less pop-driven direction, mixing heavier guitars and drums, conjuring classic Weezer before Rivers Cuomo got all secluded and strange. See for yourself Saturday at Gus’ Pub, before The Superfantastics hit the road again.
