This saucy, somewhat malevolent foursome is up to album number seven, so the jailbait years are over. Call the music formulaic, derivative even, but don’t sell it short on hooks or ideas. Clearly, suggestions to be more ladylike have not been heeded. The songs on Bitchin’ move past the lust and aggression of earlier efforts to demands and coping mechanisms, like “Don’t Wait Up For Me” and “Better Off Dancing.” Even if you want to attribute The Donnas’ fury to inspiration from ZZ top or Joan Jett, there’s no denying the confident playing and good group vocals at moments of emphasis. With few surprises, The Donnas keep it rough enough to rock.
