HIWF Saturday | Music | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Members of the “I heart Oliver Jeffers” fan club are picking out outfits for this Saturday’s HIWF reading (10am, Lord Nelson, $10). The heartthrob Belfast artist and author (he’s the Jamie Oliver of the kid’s book world) will be drawing live while one of his stories is read. If you’re not familiar, it’s worth a trip to your local bookstore for How to Catch a Star or my favourite, The Incredible Book Eating Boy.

NSCAD grad and Canadian art fave Kelly Mark returns to town for Stupid Heaven at MSVU Gallery, where she had her first solo exhibition. More than 10 years of work includes her latest, REM, “a four-room installation of a feature-length video mash-up, made of footage gathered from more than 170 different sources broadcast on TV.” Sadly, that sounds like my Saturday night. But not this week: The opening reception is this Saturday at 7:30pm. There’s a free bus leaving 5163 Duke Street at 7:15pm.

Another of my favourite artists, David R. Harper, who combines taxidermy and embroidery in his sculptures, has a new show at Seeds Gallery (1892 Hollis) that includes a full-sized bear!
