Death Race

Or, you can watch this one on Spike TV.

Death Race is the kind of movie you would catch on the Spike network. It has a kind of purposeful quality that intends to apply some metaphor or meaning to its gratuitous violence and dystopian vision of American society, but fails to realize that this is, in fact, a movie about muscle car races set within a comically huge island prison. Executed with a failure of mirth, Death Race would be a blast if it wasn't so damn serious. Joan Allen, give us a smile! The movie itself is fine. The tone never wavers, the lapses in logic are never offensive and it features everything you could possibly want from such a picture: gory violence, a satisfying car crash, women straight from the pages of Maxim magazine, stupid, nonsensical yet emphatic badass dialogue and a happy ending. The film succeeds but never winks at genre conventions, making a movie that is watchable but not as fun as I had hoped.
