“It’s time to pass it on to someone who'll make it bigger and better because they have that passion I had at 23 when I opened it,” says Barb Israel who opened Pink Mascara Accessories (5640 Spring Garden Road) five years ago. Since then she's been helping Haligonians accessorize with what they're buying from other local shops, taking inspiration from the stores around her.
“I've seen the best years and the worst years, you've just got to stay positive,” says Israel. “Being self employed taught me to fight my own battles.” As of February 1, she’s moved on to the family real estate biz and passed her entrepreneurial torch onto Meranda Oliver, who’ll continue to bring the same brands and scene-stealing jewellery into the shop.
