Has anyone noticed how many Conservative placards are found in front of rental properties in Halifax?
To me, this is a poignant image. A “Ted Larsen” sign on the lawn of a rundown apartment house is a slap in the face to tenants.
Presumably, the landlord, living somewhere in SUV suburbia, has taken it upon himself to voice his political views through the people who pay him rent. He likely has no qualms about this. He owns the place, right? And it is his democratic right to give a shout out to the party who truly has his back.
The problem is, the tenant lives there. The tenant cooks, pays bills, laughs, and has political discussions there. This is a tenant’s home.
So it’s not enough to charge often exorbitant rents for places in need of repair – no, the landlord has to think for us too.
There’s no doubt that tenants vastly outnumber landlords in Halifax. The question boils down to this: do you cast a vote for the average urban citizen or the landlord?
I’m sure Ted Larsen hopes you go for the latter.
