Moving the cars off Grand Parade is a dream that just took a big step towards reality. At a Committee of the Whole meeting this afternoon, Metro's councillors voted to turn their parking lot back into a public square by September 1, 2007. Although this deadline is considerably later than the April 1 no parking zone that city staff had suggested — the pro-parking councillors are desperately clinging to their privilege for a few more months — it's a lot sooner than I'd imagined council would act, which was sometime into hell's second ice age. After the committee of the whole's unanimous vote in favour of the parking change, the matter now moves to council for another vote. I don't understand why, since the committee is comprised of the whole regional council, but it looks like the council vote is a formality at this point. Grand Parade has been freed.
