Maid in heaven

Picking a wedding dress is tough. Helping multiple bridesmaids agree on what to wear is ever harder. Wedding fashion veteran Gail Cybulski offers tips.

I’ve picked my wedding party but have no idea what I want them to wear. Where do I even begin?

I think the more prepared the group can be before they start shopping, the easier it is. Some times the bride enjoys starting the shopping process alone, beginning with getting well- acquainted with what’s out there. It can be very overwhelming when you’re coming in with four girls and they all want to try on everything...it gets tiring. So sometimes it’s a good idea if a bride comes in, peeks around and sees the volume of what they can try on and does a little research before she comes in with her group. I always like to meet with the bride and find out what her vision of her wedding is, and what her venue is.

If the bride has a bridal party that she can’t get together, say if her bridesmaids are scattered in different cities, at that point she might have online chats with them or send them to particular designers’ websites. Then she can OK a dress if it’s the right one, or come in and see a pick in person and get the idea of the colours and things like that. Then the girls can send her all of their measurements.

My bridal party is very diverse size-wise. I really want them to all feel comfortable, can you offer any tips or styles to avoid?

If the bridal part includes several different sizes, ranging from size two to 24, sometimes it’s not always the right direction to go with an extremely short dress thinking it will be attractive and comfortable, for all. You have to make sure the length will be fine whether you bend over, or have to pick something up or move around. There are some mighty short dresses out there right now and if you have different sizes and shapes you may want to consider this.

What are some recent trends you’ve noticed in bridesmaid fashion?

I had a girl in last week who loved colour so much that each of her girls is wearing a very vibrant colour. There are really no rules right at the moment. I’m noticing a trend with jewel tones, everyone’s in jewel tones. And black has been very in this year as well, but I’m thinking black will always be in. It makes for a very classic wedding.
