Word is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives

Toronto International Film Festival’s Movie Night in Halifax projects a special screening for International Day Against Homophobia.

In honour of International Day Against Homophobia, the Toronto International Film Festival’s Movie Night in Halifax will be screening the 1978 landmark documentary Word is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives. The first feature length documentary about gay and lesbian individuals made by gay filmmakers, it’s comprised of interviews with 26 North Americans of diverse ethnicity, race and class; their only connection being homosexuality. Will Roberts, who’s managing the screening, says the movie is important as it changed what was accessible in mainstream media. “It brought homosexuals home to everyday life,” says Roberts, and it showed that the documentary’s subjects were normal people as opposed to sensationalized stereotypes. Fulfilling the Movie Night’s goal to “diversify access to cinema in Halifax,” May 17 will present an opportunity to see a groundbreaking, iconic film that has been hard to find for the past 20 years.
