The Juan MacLean
Less Than Human
(DFA/EMI)
Juan MacLean is the former guitarist and keyboard player for mid-’90s Sub Pop space-alien cock-rockers Six Finger Satellite (their Double Deuce show remains a Halifax musical highlight). The recording is all dance robot, all the time. Sounding like some abandoned child of French electronica darlings AIR and Daft Punk, on Less Than Human, Mr. Juan MacLean channels Kraftwerk and a sound found most often in the grooves of old vinyl records released in the early ’80s. This recording is a soundscape sprinkled with a few tidbits of voices — ghosts hidden behind strips of analogue tape trying to warn us of some Terminator-like invasion of the electronic kind. This music may sound sweet at times, but ultimately it is menacing.
