The Boys Are Back

Directed by Scott Hicks (Miramax)

The Boys Are Back is set in Australia and stars Clive Owen as a father of two who has just lost his wife to cancer. He's a sports reporter, a bit of a free spirit with no idea how to single-handedly raise the boys. The opening passages are very touching and pack a lot of emotional punch, but the movie starts to fall apart around the halfway mark and especially toward the end when Owen starts dating: We're meant to think that everything is working out, when from a logical view, it obviously isn't. Plus, there's a scene of a house party breaking out that makes no sense. Are there really gangs of roaming teenagers in Australia just driving around looking for a house where the parents aren't home?
