The only Hunger Games ripoff that’s managed to stick so far—See you in hell, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones! Didn’t care even a little bit, The Maze Runner!—Insurgent, part two of the awkwardly billed The Divergent Series, finds Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) in exile with complete dodos Caleb (Ansel Elgort) and Peter (Miles Teller, not trying very hard).They are being hunted by a government led by Kate Winslet, known only as Jeanine—Is she the president? Is she the mayor? Is she the factotum?—who wants to stop their damned revolution oh and also find a divergent person to open up a box that contains all the secrets to the world not being so dystopic moving forward. Guess who is 100 percent divergent? Cher girl Tris, who is already struggling with the fact that she had to kill a friend and leave her mom’s dead body in the street in part one. Cruelly only available in 3D, Insurgent’s train fights, simulated fires and rebel chic sure come right at you, and Woodley is dependably solid despite being in a terrible vest most of the movie, but Winslet is an evil wonder to watch. Hair pulled tight and dress pulled tighter, she is unflappable and heartless and it’s awesome. Too bad it’s in a movie that doesn’t quite deserve her.
