Metamorphic Theatre | Music | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Metamorphic Theatre announces its 2008 season with the third annual Kick It! launch party, Saturday February 23, from 8pm to midnight at the Garrison Brewing Company (1149 Marginal). The evening’s program will include music from Christina Martin, Amy Blanchard and Sarah Mian, a silent auction and DJ Johnston Farrow. Andrew Murphy, programming manager for The Atlantic Film Festival Association will host. The $25 ticket price goes entirely to supporting the company’s operating costs. “We’re a small theatre company with a modest season of two productions,” explains Metamorphic co-founder Samantha Madore. “But it’s still important to raise funds so we can put on the best productions possible, while feeling like we’re not scrimping.”

Madore and her fellow co-founder, Amy Reitsma, unveil the second production for the season at the event. The first, Living My Life in Circles, by Halifax playwright Caitlin Pilsworth, was developed through Metamorphic’s Script to Stage Project (a vehicle in the same vein as the AFF’s Inspired Script series). The play tells the story of Van, her self-absorbed, eccentric mother and her strict Catholic aunt---and the bearing both have on her growing up. The contrasting, often conflicting influences affecting a young person is an idea we can all relate to, says Madore. She adds, “It’s from a woman’s perspective as well, which has become somewhat of a trend in the productions we’ve done in the past.” This was the second go-round for the Script to Stage process and it was “a great experience” for the company. “We reviewed a number of great scripts and had a tough time narrowing it down to just one. There were some pretty off-the-wall scripts that would have been really fun to produce as well, had we a bigger budget to work with.” The show opens May 1 at the Bus Stop Theatre (2203 Gottingen).
