Gold and Wax
(Palm Pictures)
Gold and Wax shows an Ethiopian singer sure enough to sing in her native tongue (love those ululates!) over tracks that take rhythms, arrangements and tempos from elsewhere in Africa, the Caribbean, North America and India. “Ambasale,” built on an awesome Afro-Funk foundation stands out. The one English track, “Utopia,” could’ve been left out for its singalong sentimentality. You can hear producer and bass player Bill Laswell all over this album. With funk-keys man Bernie Worrell, percussionist Karsh Kale, multitalented African players such as Assaye Zegeye and even guitarist Buckethead, this record brings together a global supergroup.
