Five fun music things to do this weekend

So many shows and venues to choose from for punk, rap, folk and more

Five fun music things to do this weekend
Toronto/Sackville NB's Kappa Chow

No need to stress about what to do, my dudes, but there is SO MUCH music going on, it's hard to pick. You can either thrash out at a Khyber fundraiser, or sit back and get sad with some heartfelt folk or dance with Skratch Bastid. From all our listings, here are five things to do:

1. Beer & Chill? Stilldrunk at Stillwell

Halifax's DJ Loukas Stilldrunk is spinning all vinyl tonight at Stillwell (1672 Barrington Street). One of our favourite dudes behind The Jam, Stilldrunk spins some diverse stuff, including lots of new wave, which makes chilling in that chic space, snacking that Stillwell menu and sipping them sexy beers real nice. You really can't pin this DJ down, unless you challenge him to some pinball.

2. In the Dead of Winter Music Festival

As covered in our In the Dead of Winter issue this week, you can catch some amazing acts tonight, like Catherine MacLellan, Gianna Lauren, The Burning Hell, The Weather Station and Dana Beeler at three venues, as well as tomorrow for our cover girls Dark for Dark, or Fortunate Ones and so many more. There's also a panel tomorrow afternoon ("A Women in Music Industry Session") and songcircles, but you better buy those tickets ASAP.

3. ALL-AGES: Punk Show

Saturday night at Radstorm (6050 Almon, 7pm, $5), after a badass game of Punk Rock Bingo (5pm-7pm), two sweet touring bands and some locals hit the DIY-venue's all-ages, booze-free stage for your unknown pleasures: Toronto/Sackville NB's Kappa Chow, Montreal's Towanda, Halifax sonic youngsters Surveillance and the elusive Sparkle Water. This is gonna ROCK.

4. A Rap Special at The Seahorse

As Skratch Bastid tears up The Marquee with his "Let's Dance" remix, there's a rap-reggae-DJ show downstairs at The Seahorse (2037 Gottingen, 9pm, $8) to keep you moving all night long (all night) (s/o Lionel Richie). The line-up is STACKED like fresh Air Jordans (haha, Adria, nice one), and it includes our homeboy Ghettosocks, reggae-bros Dub Kartel, our cover girl Real Eyez, the baritone of Ambition and spinning by DJ T-Woo. Dub Kartel says the pairing is just like "Kush and OJ." Sure, I'm down with that. It's gonna be a magical night on Gottingen.

5. Punk Rock/90s Rock Cover Bands

I love Menz Bar (2182 Gottingen), not least for barkeep Darryl but because it's probably the most welcoming and accepting bar in Halifax. One night there was a sex party, an indie rock show and a jazz band playing at all once like a kinky, florescent-coloured utopia. At 10pm on Saturday, four local bands are covering some legendary 90s rock and punk as follows: The La La Loverings (a Pixies cover band, swoon), Gun Club (performed by The Cannisters), Them Craps (covering The Cramps) and The Stutz-Bearcats (covering The Stooges). Gonna be good 1, 2, 3, 4.
