The second installment of Burn to Shine, a music-documentary series produced by Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, is a gorgeously shot portrait of one place and one time that will never be recreated. Featuring Chicago bands playing a single song each inside a building set for demolition, the film sets to capture a music scene in a setting where the intimacy is only heightened by the sheer finality of the event. (The final footage of the house being destroyed by a backhoe is particularly eerie and violent.) This time around longtime producer and bassist Bob Weston curates the session, which includes a diverse cast of artists — from Wilco to the angular, spitfire angst of Shellac to the jazz-laden explorations of Tortoise and the sweet, old-timey country folk of Freakwater — and the results are as equally satisfying as the first Washington, DC, release.
