Afternoon Delight

Directed by Jill Soloway (72 Productions/Rincon)

Afternoon Delight is a meandering story about sexual excitement, boundary testing and the wreckage of revenge. Rachael (Kathryn Hahn) is a quirky and charming stay-at-home mom who seems to have everything: a beautiful home, a successful husband and a good child. Unfortunately, she is bored out of her skull and likely depressed. Rachael becomes obsessed with a barely-legal stripper who gives her a lap dance and eventually moves the free-spirited sex worker into her pseudo-perfect life. Juno Temple, the raucous spitfire from Dirty Girl, plays the baby-face stripper named McKenna. Along with garbage bags full of clothes, McKenna brings a tempting and taboo distraction into Rachael's middle-class reality. Writer-director Jill Soloway achieves the perfect balance between entertainment and honesty in her first feature film. In case you ever run into a similar situation, Afternoon Delight will remind you to ask: "How did the stripper get in the maids' room?"
