Rules of the road | Opinion | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

To the editor,

As a bicyclist in Halifax, I have noticed a number of dangerous dysfunctions in the streets of this city. Roads riddled with potholes make it hazardous for bicyclists. For example, there is an abysmal pothole situation on the corner of Rainnie Drive and Ahern Road; the street is in a shameful state of disrepair and has been for a couple of years.

Also disgraceful is the lack of speed limit signs around the area of South Park Street between Morris and South Streets. Motorists should show respect for the neighbourhood and the people in it. There have been numerous cases of near-misses by careless drivers in the area. I have been nearly knocked down on the corner of South and South Park Street by a motorist who was in a hurry to turn right on a red light.

Life in the city should not be a scary experience. The situation could be easily remedied if motorists see that there are consequences to their dangerous driving habits. Most drivers are reasonable and drive in a safe way, but those who threaten life and limb should pay a fine and have their licences revoked.
