How to ride, and watch, this weekend’s Naked Bike Ride

1. Remember to wear sunscreen on all that skin not normally exposed to daylight. Our riders recommend slathering it on and letting it dry before attempting any body paint.

2. Scotch tape will not keep pasties on in the wind.

3. It can get cold down by the waterfront. "You've been warned," says veteran naked bike rider Chris Maxwell.

4. Only go as bare as you dare. "Lots of people keep their bottoms on, and lots of women keep some sort of top on," says Maxwell. Some people start out more covered and shed some layers as the ride progresses.

5. Figure out your costume before you arrive. Sketch something out, or paint up first at home with the help of friends. Make sure to try out any costumes ahead of time so you know what the odds are of a wardrobe malfunction.

6. Someone will guard your clothes at the staging area, but if you're really nervous remember to bring a backpack or something to carry your duds in while riding.

7. Try to stay with the group (especially if you don't have your clothes with you). That said, riders can feel free to join in part-way through.

8. Maybe give some consideration to a cover for your bicycle seat. Or at least have some disinfecting wipes handy for when you're done.

9. Know your limits, and don't let people coerce you into doing something you're not comfortable with. Maxwell also advises to know why you're attending and focus on that message. It could be about bike safety, nudism/naturism, freeing the nipple or just having fun.

10. If you're participating, you belong.

For observers

1. There will be a designated area where media can snap photos. There should be no random photography anywhere else within the staging area. Respect people's privacy unless they tell you otherwise. If you're not media or a participant, wait until the ride starts before taking photos.

2. Absolutely always ask permission to take pictures of someone. Also, Maxwell says, it helps to be as naked as the subject you wish to photograph.

3. Feel free to take photos during the ride, and remember that the riders would love it if you could make the pics easy to find online. The hashtag this year is WNBRHalifax2015, and related Facebook and Flickr groups for WNBR Halifax have also been created.
