Game on

The World Cup starts today, and Team Coast is ready for action.

Game on
from CBC's webcast
South Africa celebrates the first goal of the FIFA 2010 World Cup of soccer. Or football.
The World Cup finally started today—you might've heard—and Team Coast is there. Not there in South Africa. There watching live webcasts on our computers at work, trying to figure out what the hell is going on in a sport that can have offsides without a blue line. Soccer may be the biggest game on the planet, but about the only thing we know the about it is that most people don't even call it soccer. That's why we started Footloose!

This blog is by dummies for dummies. As the month-long tourament goes on, we'll be watching, offering some entertainment and maybe even a little education here. We do have some real soccer experts (football experts? futbol?) lined up who can answer questions—ours and yours, so please don't be scared to betray your ignorance in the comments—and maybe near the end of this thing we'll be so into it that we do some game liveblogging here. But don't depend on Footloose! as you live score source.

Except holy shut, South Africa just scored in against Mexico in the opening match of the whole shooting match. We can't tell you what a FIFA is, but we know that's a huge goal. Mexico 0, South Africa 1. Game on.
