77kg class weightlifting | Sports | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

The Turk tried it. The Japanese lifter tried it. The Russian tried it. They all dropped the weights. Then the Armenian tried it. He went up. Took a few breaths. Some people yelled stuff at him. The small crowd laughed. The Armenian gripped the weight. He bent over, took another breath with his face next to the bar. He waited. More shouts. Then, he lifted. Teetered. The crowd goes crazy. Gevorg Davtyan, a 77kg man, pushed his thighs and lifted 165kg. Two minutes later, Chinese lifter Hongli Li walked up on stage and lifted 168 kg quickly, like it was an Easter ham hock! Forget swimming, gimme weightlifting.

PS The most common weightlifting injury is back strain. They are repetitive injuries.PPS 9 am - Totally compelling footage on CBC of people hanging out in the weightlifting warm up area. Seriously - it's interesting! The tension and the boredom. It's just like the Dartmouth Sportsplex.
