This is a Call: The Life and Times of Dave Grohl

By Paul Brannigan (Da Capo)

Kerrang! editor Paul Brannigan's new biography, This is a Call: The Life and Times of Dave Grohl, tells the triumphant rise of everyone's favourite drummer from punk rock obscurity to fronting one of the biggest arena rock acts. Brannigan does a good job detailing Grohl's early years but sometimes gets lost in the details, devoting large chunks of the book to background information regarding punk's key players like Ian MacKaye and Kurt Cobain. The book also focuses unnecessarily on Grohl's work with Nirvana---going so far as to decorate the hardcover sleeve with pull-quotes about Grohl's heartbreak over Cobain's death---and doesn't pay enough time discussing his songwriting growth with Foo Fighters. For Foo fans, it may be worth it to read this book accompanied by their Back and Forth documentary to fully understand Grohl's history.
