Spring Awakening is an old play (written in 1891) given a new twist by a pop rock score that allows the troubled teen characters to unleash their tortured inner monologues. It’s a work that’s both provocative and disturbing, not because of its graphic sexual content but because it explores truly troubling issues like suicide, sexual violence and child abuse. The play showcases the large cast of Neptune Theatre School’s Pre-Professional Training Program but focuses on a trio of teens. Julia Topple is a talented actor with a pure voice. She is outstanding as the curious ingénue Wendla. James MacLean shines as the brilliant and free-thinking Melchior and Adam Smith gives a poignant performance as the sensitive Moritz. There are lots of cleverly choreographed song and dance numbers (“Totally Fucked” was an audience favourite) and beautifully creative staging (I particularly loved the lovers intertwined to represent trees.) Spring Awakening won’t make you want to go back to those fevered teenage years, but it will make you appreciate the talent and energy of these 17 young performers.
