"The idea really came when I moved to Dartmouth and started walking around the neighbourhood," says Hannah Minzloff of Portraits on Portland, an exhibit which captures the essence of a five-block section of Old Dartmouth's main street through photos of it's local business owners. Since making the move across the bridge in 2009 Minzloff's done a lot of walking, during which she's gotten to know her neighbours, heard their stories and noticed the contrast between new and old Portland Street. "I love the diversity of the economy, of the culture, of the education backgrounds, where people come from," says Minzloff, whose pride in the past and present and hopes for the future were channeled into not only a series of portraits, but some related events too. Saturday September 15 (2:30pm) sees a panel discussion on the evolution of downtown Dartmouth, and the following Saturday, a storytelling circle hosted by Cindy Campbell of Storytellers of Canada. —Allison Saunders
