Peter Kelly wants to give artists $$

Annual Mayor’s Award in Contemporary Visual Art comes with a sweet $25,000.

We’re a little weary from all this recession talk (being the arts, a portfolio has a slightly different meaning and weight), but we do like cash. Especially when it’s a well-deserved award. Like the new $25,000 Mayor’s Award in Contemporary Visual Art. Halifax Regional Municipality is “sponsoring a competition and purchase program for emerging and mid-career visual artists working in a 2D format. This includes painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and collage or mixed media as well as any work of archival quality, in two dimensions.”The award, which is intended to be an annual competition, will honour artists whose artwork “displays a high degree of technical proficiency and conceptual strength.” An exhibition of shortlisted artists will also be held in Halifax Hall at Halifax City Hall. If you’re interested, or no someone who should be, check out halifax.ca/procurement/tenders3.asp (RFP 08-367), or contact Jamie MacLellan, HRM Cultural Affairs, with questions.
