Hot diggity Dog Day: a Q & A

Hot diggity Dog Day: a Q & A
Ain’t no sunshine when Dog Day’s gone.

The gloom-some twosome otherwise known as Dog Day (Seth Smith and Nancy Urich) are heading back to Austin, Texas for a week of madness via South by Southwest festival. But before they do that, they’re playing a show to try to raise a little cash-money. This is where you come in: show your face at Michael's this Saturday night and sleep soundly knowing your cover charge helped the pair buy a crappy taco or two.

Dog Day will be joined by Long Weekends as well as Husband & Knife at Michael’s Bar & Grill, 6100 Young Street on Saturday night at 10pm. Bring at LEAST $8 with you.

We fired a few questions in Nancy’s direction and she gave us the goods on bad tacos, Seth’s film Lowlife (which you can read about here) and taking the summer off.

Q: What are your favourite parts of the festival and visiting Austin? Starting with the "business" side of the things.

A: We try not to get too businessy, because that's not so fun, but hanging out with bands can be business when you talk touring. Most bands that make it to South by Southwest are usually experienced in touring the US so it's good to hear about the hidden gems.

Q:And what about the pleasure side?

A: South by Southwest is just plain crazy. There are people everywhere and most clubs are little---like Stage Nine sized. It gets very loud when multiple bands are playing on mulitple patios. It's fun to happen upon a surprise show of an awesome band.

Q:Is it possible to get sick of tacos?

A: Yes, it is very easy to get sick of tacos. Especially because the tacos that are available are usually gross. We're talking some dried up old beans with salsa on them and maybe some limp lettuce, and you have to eat like eight for it to be a meal because they're tiny. There is good food in Austin though, somewhere.

Q: When you're all schmoozed out, who are you looking forward to seeing?

A: Off---I think---will be back there this year, and after a year of listening to that tape, I am ready for it. We are going to see the Wedding Present this year too which will be neat. And Daniel Johnston will be there this time! I want to see Each Other, Cousins, DUZ and Hooded Fang too. It’s hard to plan this stuff.

Q: Can you tell me a little about the status of Lowlife?

A: We were pleasantly surprised with the amount of support that we've received so far, and we have a few weeks left on the campaign. At the moment we're applying to film festivals. The plan is to show it in the Fall, but anything could happen. It's all very new and exciting! I'm just glad this portion of film production happens indoors, while wearing dry clothing.

Q: Any other new projects or plans to speak of ?

A: We're going to do a cross-Canada tour in June that includes dates at the Ottawa Explosion, Sled Island (hopefully), dates with Apollo Ghosts in the Vancouver area, and much zig zagging across the border. We're taking the summer off to spend at the beach with Woof once the black flies die down.
