If you blinked, you may have missed Kelly Zwicker’s Halifax Scene Recipe Zine at the Halifax Zine Fair during HPX. The zine, filled with recipes from excellent locals like Dog Day, Windom Earle, Envision, BA Johnston, York Redoubt and more, sold out quickly, but there are more on the way. The zine was a labour of love for Zwicker, a way to memorialize a close friend of hers, musician and music fan Alex Fountain, who died earlier this year. “I was thinking of ways to occupy myself after his death, to keep my mind off of it somehow,” says Zwicker. “It was hard at first because he was one of the main people I crafted with. We loved to craft together, we often went to the Roberts Street zine library, and he was a huge part of the music scene. So I thought that this would be the perfect way to honour his memory.” Zwicker even included a recipe the two of them made together, strawberry peach pie.

In addition to asking bands for recipes, Zwicker also asked them their favourite music to listen to while cooking, favourite diner, favourite food related songs, and future plans as a band. If you want to see once and for all what your favourite local bands are like in the kitchen, Zwicker is printing more copies and these will be available at Mary Janes Smoke Shop, downstairs at the Paperchase, and hopefully Strange Adventures. If you’d like to reserve one of the new batch, send Zwicker an email at [email protected]
