Finding the right English Words

The PEI band plays Alderney Landing's Canada Day concert with Joel Plaskett, The David Myles Trio, Rose Cousins, Steve Poltz, Telfer and Deep Dark Woods.

Prince Edward Island pop-rock band English Words---the artists formerly known as Smothered in Hugs---is keeping its sound but changing its name image. "We're not cute and cuddly," says English Words lead singer Ryan Crane, of the name change. "The whole thing started years and years ago as a reference to a Guided by Voices song, but of course along the way you learn being called Smothered in Hugs doesn't really do you any favours---people think you'll show up dressed in pink pyjamas." Keeping his pink pyjamas for off-stage antics, Crane says the band's rock sound hasn't changed. "It's not like we changed our name and became an electroclash band. People who've seen us before can expect the same thing." Band members Crane, Josh Byrne, Aaron Crane, Todd MacLean and Andrew Murray are hopping the strait to be part of the Canada Day celebrations at Alderney Landing, and if you miss this (free!) concert you can catch them again with Hey Rosetta! on July 24 at the Paragon.
