"I don't really know how you measure success," says Caila Thompson-Hannant, the voice and mind behind electronic dirt-pop project Mozart's Sister. Over the last three years, the Montreal artist has received tons of exposure in major American music press and performed at SXSW. Despite the attention, she says her life hasn't changed much and it's curious the way people perceive her. Still, her first LP, Being, released this summer, showcases her incredible vocal range and dark electro-creativity.
"Since I was really little, I sang in choirs and took classical voice lessons, then I played synth in my other bands," she says. "But when I got a computer in 2008, I got more interested in digital stuff, and I think my influences changed, and I also got interested in how to use samples, which I think is all about listening and then re-interpreting."
A good friend of Grimes, Mozart's Sister is part of the digital zeitgeist. "I would like to be creating music that has a trippy, innocent vibe, like kinda bright and innocent in a weird way, with a sinister undercurrent, with a more surreal undercurrent, an integration between stuff that is scary and stuff that is beautiful and safe," she says, adding that 2001 Japanese animated film Spirited Away is an example of the style of visual media that would be complemented by her music.
Mozart's Sister returns to Halifax off a cross-country tour in support of Being, which Thompson-Hannant says was a somewhat lonesome experience: "No one was really at any of the shows we played. It was like playing to spirits and histories and, like, other worlds." So, Halifax, this is your time to shine.
