The booming Albertan job market has taken another of Nova Scotia’s sons from its undulating bosom. The bright lights, big money of Westlock County has proven too good an opportunity to pass up for ex-mayor Peter Kelly.

As published in the Westlock News, the award-winning weekly Westlock newspaper (which also serves the village of Clyde), Kelly has been hired this week as the municipality’s new CAO.

The former Halifax mayor, who we’ve written a bit about before, tells that paper he will bring experience in both intra- and inter-governmental relations to his new roll.

“It’s all about serving our masters, which is the public,” he’s quoted as saying.

Mayor for 12 years, Kelly had previously served the public of Halifax by having them pay off a $360,000 bill in the concert scandal, and then also taking some liberties in removing over $160,000 from a dead woman’s personal bank account.

It’s unclear if paying off debts factored into Kelly’s decision to move out west, like so many a university graduate.

Aside from having a logo straight out of ’80s pro wrestling, Westlock sits about 85 km north of Edmonton. According to Wikipedia, average annual precipitation falls within 468 mm.

What this means for HRM’s termite population, remains to be seen.

  1. Yup. Kelly is an embarrassment and all, but his ship has sailed.

But I sometimes wonder if the coast is committed to pursuing him right into his grave.

    Obsessed much?

  2. Maybe Tim will come back to twist the knife a little more. Give it a rest. Halifax dumped raw sewage into the harbour for 250 years and Kelly fixed that. So far with Savage we got a new logo.

  3. I wonder if we are gonna get an article every time someone takes a job out west because all kelly is is a private citizen advancing their career. If that is becoming news the coast needs to hire more writers

  4. Kelly was a blessing for the city’s underserved esp african canadian community, along with cleaning up the harbour. I am sure he will do great in his new role

  5. Hold on a second…The Coast is NOT “holding on to its overkill of hatred for Peter Kelly”! The fact is, he was never held accountable for the financial scandals that dominated the last few years of his mayoral tenure. Kelly may not have been the main person to blame for the concert scandal, but he knew all about the improper loans and made sure to prevent council form knowing about it. And of course, there was also the Mary Thibeault estate scandal.

I refuse to listen to those who say it’s time to leave Kelly alone…the cold hard truth is, people in important positions of power in Nova Scotia are far too often not held to the same judicial standard that regular folks are. Any thinking person would have (or should have) had the foresight to check Kelly’s record a little more thoroughly. As one man from Westlock County is quoted as saying: “With all this background and all the scandals…it’s crazy…My blood started to boil when I started to read some of this. I don’t hire an employee without Googling his name, and that’s just to do a tire repair. This guy’s dealing with our money and everything else.”

    Think about it!
