To the editor,

These days it's wiser to let music journalists describe how a band sounds than to let the band themselves try and do it. Most people in bands these days can barely reference Dinosaur Jr. or Mudhoney, let alone preceding alternative-nation luminaries.

This is why when reading the March 15 piece on Brampton, Ontario, trio Junction ("Junction yard," by Shannon Webb-Campbell) I cringed at her description of the band. Referencing Meligrove Band, By Divine Right and Moneen? Is Ms. Webb-Campbell's musical trough that shallow? Surely, as fine as these acts are, there is a whole entire world of groups to name-drop and reference other than those three. It seems like Shannon Webb-Campbell's record/CD collection begins at Nirvana's Nevermind, and now refuses to journey outside the province of Ontario.

I'm glad she seems supportive of Canadian music, but I don't think she should be writing about music, Canadian or otherwise.
