Hockey isn’t the expensive, ultra-competitive sport it’s made out to be---there’s a sledge version for people with special needs, and recreational leagues for any skill level. Start by calling your local rink. For example, SportsPlex has a drop-in recreational league for people of “decent ability” organized by Bob Dalling. The first 20 people in the dressing room by noon on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays get to play. Women are welcome too---just ask for Bob at the front desk. It’s $10 a game. Sledge hockey is a way for people with differing levels of mobility to get involved in the sport. If you know how to manoeuvre on a bladed-sledge using two sticks to propel yourself, you can register for the recreational league that meets at the new BMO Centre in Bedford. It costs $20 to register, which you can do by calling Darren at Hockey Nova Scotia.
