The University of Prince Edward Island launched their Sustainable Design Engineering program in 2014, a Bachelor of Science degree. Students are educated in engineering science, fundamental science and mathematics, as well as engineering design, communication, analysis project management and professional ethics.
Students entering the UPEI Engineering program are actively engaged in the profession of engineering from day one. The UPEI Engineering program is designed to provide a highly flexible learning environment that is responsive to the dynamic needs of students and the industries that employ them.
The four-year program is made up of a two-year foundational engineering diploma, which has historically been one of UPEI's strengths, followed by third and fourth years to complete the specific degree. UPEI is already ahead of schedule, however, as this year they have welcomed 12 students into the third year of the program—years ahead of schedule.
"This is especially meaningful as, for the first time in history, the university is offering a third-year engineering curriculum as part of our new four-year degree program," says President and Vice-Chancellor Alaa Abd-El-Aziz. "These students, in 2017, will represent the first graduating class with a UPEI engineering degree."
These students have broken educational ground, and will have three potential focus areas: mechatronics, sustainable energy and bio-resources, which possess great opportunities for engineering innovation and employment opportunities.
