Douchebag

I always believed there is good in everyone. Then I met you, we fell in love, we got pregnant and now you want nothing to do with me. What man has sex unprotected with his girlfriend over and over, gets her pregnant and then just acts like she is evil because she morally does not want to…

Lazy littering slobs

Halifax “used” to be the second-cleanest city in Canada after Victoria B.C. And now appears to me to be the filthiest city. So sad “some” people can`t use a garbage can within four or five steps away, but instead have to throw their trash on the sidewalk, street or a grassy area (be it private or…

Traffic lights

Why, oh, why do you tease me, so? I drive through the same intersections regularly (Young/Windsor, Dutch Village/Alma-Titus), usually at about the same times each day. Sometimes I get an advanced flashing green, sometimes I don’t. I get to the intersection well before the light changes, so I know I’m on time. I sit there,…

We can hear you

[Image-1] The downtown bars are closing. It’s 3am on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. You’re walking home with your friends—perhaps to the townhouses halfway down Duncan Street. The street looks dark and deserted, as if you’re the only ones here—but inside all of those houses are your neighbours. We can hear your voices and everything…

I don’t need a second opinion

What is up with clothing stores that have mirrors outside, rather than inside, their changing rooms? I’m certainly not a fan of this selling tactic. —Self-Conscious Shopper

Be a responsible dog owner

To the mindless couple, who clearly lacked any common sense, and let their two large dogs (a golden retriever and a white terrier mix) roam the Common off-leash:  LEARN HOW TO BE IN CONTROL OF YOUR PETS IF YOU’RE GOING TO WALK THEM OFF-LEASH IN A PUBLIC SPACE!!!!!!! Maggie Jayne’s rainbow connection

Maggie MacCormick and Victoria Kristofic met in a NSCAD class, but you can blame their collaboration on the rainbow. “Victoria had these great rainbow embroidery designs and she suggested to add them to a dress I had,” says MacCormick. “I sort of had this rainbow theme going with my work too. We share an aesthetic…

Council votes down height restriction for Willow Tree tower

Halifax has a fear of heights. That seems to be the message from city council in deciding not to limit the height of a proposed 29-storey development on Quinpool Road that’s been widely panned by both HRM staff and members of the public. A report by planning applications manager Carl Purvis recommended council limit the…

Canadian Money Worth?

My late starting mornings aside, my first thing check of the news today revealed yet another depressing story, our money is dropping in value. Great. Another knife into the side of struggling Canadians. My first thought is to run to the bank and pull all my savings, as little or none as that may be…

Defending a wilderness

In the hot and dry days of summer, when most people were out searching for some relaxation at the lake or the beach or wherever, 1,420 of your fellow residents were busy writing letters to city hall. What’s even more extraordinary about this, aside from so many folks proactively participating in a municipal planning issue…

SCIENCE MATTERS: The simple-minded nature of human super predators

[Image-1] Humans are the world’s top predator. The way we fulfil this role is often mired in controversy, from factory farming to trophy hunting to predator control. The latter is the process governments use to kill carnivores like wolves, coyotes and cougars to stop them from hunting threatened species like caribou—even though human activity is…

How to find a girlfriend?

[Image-1] I am sure I’m opening myself up for some harsh comments here but whatever…I haven’t tried online dating but was thinking about it. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories from both men and women so I am reluctant to sign up. In fact, I’d really rather not. I wouldn’t ask someone out at…

Contrary to your believe people know you are the opposite of what you portray to be. Do you ever wonder what justifies your behaviour and if there is anything wrong with deceiving your partner. Are you at all aware that you are conning yourself in thinking your possessions and looks make you a valuable partner?…

Two old guys in a red truck

[Image-1] I stopped to turn in to a parking lot. Another vehicle was coming out. You were sufficiently annoyed that you had to blow your horn, pull up beside me and COMPLETELY lose your shit! Really? Threats of physical violence, screaming and swearing, you two are the embodiment of the red neck stereotype. A witness…

Turning Left

This bitch is about driving from Robie street to Young street, sure enough, you end up behind a vehicle turning left into Tim Horton’s. I gotto ask, where did these drivers come from? Marianas Trench brings Indiana Jones-themed tour to Halifax

You probably remember the teen-dance melodies of Marianas Trench being all over the radio in the early aughts, with the Vancouver pop-punks’ hit “Shake Tramp” peaking at 65 on the Canadian singles chart in 2006-2007. And though you might have since forgotten about the lead singer’s candy-coloured hair and all those candy-sweet melodies wrapped up…

And that’s happening in Halifax in a couple weeks. Earlier…

Bold innovations in student debt

[Image-1] Last year, Nikki Russell-Jamieson decided to chase her dream of going back to school. To make that dream a reality, the 28-year-old single mother and full-time undergrad at Mount Saint Vincent University is going to incur an enormous debt. Tuition at MSVU is expected to increase by roughly 20 percent before she’ll be able…

Time to get angry

[Image-1] Halifax has a lot of great things going for it. It also has more than its fair share of bullshit. Feeling pissed off about the state of the world? You’re not alone. Student activism is usually derided by internet commenters as sound and fury signifying little real-world experience or effective change. Fuck those assholes.…

Mental health support is just a phone call away

[Image-1] Whether it’s your first year at university or you’re a returning student, maintaining good mental health is crucial for a successful academic experience. But navigating the system can be challenging at the best of times. We often end up minimizing our mental health needs because it takes more time and energy to find the…

Pokemon Go out and discover this city

[Image-1] If you’re not careful, you’ll spend the whole school year living in a bubble. A good campus—and Halifax is loaded with ’em—is a socially fluid haven. There are places to eat, work out, even sleep if you go the dorm route (or have a sleeping bag stuffed in that backpack). Schools hope you never…

Sober sociables isn’t an easy game to play

[Image-1] On a cold Friday night, Nathaniel Crocker sits on an unkempt dorm bed, occasionally changing the song being played on the laptop. As is the unsaid tradition for students all around Halifax, Friday is a night of festivities marked primarily by drinking in dorm rooms. For the 21-year-old Crocker, weekends look a little different.…

Stay woke: mattress price guide

There are many things in life more complicated than buying a mattress, but sometimes it doesn’t feel that way. Spring or foam? Soft or firm? Boxspring? Frame? The struggle of a Muslim woman of colour in Halifax

[Image-1] “You’re not from here,” a phrase that has been said to me so many times, I can’t count. Simple tasks such as running to the bank, filled with stares. Welcome home, Halifax

[Image-5] Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like a student’s apartment. The dreadful homogeny of every new gloomy mid-rise residential complex that’s sprouting up all over the Halifax peninsula just makes the improvisational decor of student living that much more endearing. Whether it’s a six-bedroom flat shared with seven other people, or a…

SCIENCE MATTERS: In diversity, there is strength

Balancing books and band practice in university

[Image-1] It’s no secret that being a student eats up your time, body and spirit like a hungry piranha. University demands a lot. Halifax waterfront goes under the dome

Halifax’s unofficial foods

One of the city’s strangest claims to fame is that last year council took the time to vote the drippy donair our Official Food. Landlord licensing: a solution to shitty landlords?

[Image-1] When the hot water at Brett Bell’s apartment stopped working, he called the company that managed his property. It didn’t help. Since it hadn’t received complaints from any other tenants about the water system, Bell’s claim was shrugged off. “I was like, ‘I’ve been taking cold showers for the last couple days,’” says Bell.…

Halifax isn’t so bad, once you get to know it.

[Image-5] Moving across the world to a place you don’t know isn’t the easiest undertaking. Letters to the editor, September 1, 2016

Dense sensibility It has recently become public knowledge that developers who own land in and around the Birch Cove Blue Mountain wilderness area wish to develop their lands into yet another suburban subdivision. First of all, the city was planning to create a wilderness park in this area back in 2006. While the provincial government…

Support your sex worker

Q I have been seeing sex workers for 30 years, and I shudder to think how shitty my life would have been without them. Some have become friends, but I’ve appreciated all of them. Negative stereotypes about guys like me are not fair, but sex work does have its problems. What can we clients do…

Why you need to eat a bubble waffle sundae

As people stand in long lineups in the hot sun at Bang Bang Ice Cream in Toronto and Hong Kong waffles become one of the season’s most Instagrammable desserts, Halifax, of course, quietly lets a rare moment where we are in step with the times go completely unnoticed. In a basement on Spring Garden Road,…
