Willem Paynter has a busy schedule on the jazz scene, posting up at Lox Six on Thursdays and at Obladee every other Wednesday, not to mention events, festivals and corporate gigs. “These two gigs have been instrumental to my growth as a musician,” says Paynter, “and have afforded me an avenue for playing with some of the best musicians in the country.” His thank-yous start in the rehearsal room and extend city-wide: “Of course, no one wants to hear solo double bass. I must thank all the amazing musicians that I’ve had the pleasure of having in my band, especially my right-hand man and incredible sax player Martin Davidson,” he says. “It is a great honour to win Best Jazz Artist in Halifax. Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who voted for me for this award. See you at a gig!”
