Norwegian Emil Nikolaisen assembles the main formal elements of dreamy, shoegazing noise into this full-length from his Serena Maneesh project: a cascading wall of sound comprised of sharp-edged guitars, energized drums (fill after fill), spiny bass, synthesized wave after wave and ethereal vocals. It’s occasionally pretty, scary and both at the same time, as this form goes. But the album is all too studied in its adherence to the founders of this school of musical thought: Curve and My Bloody Valentine. Other recent contributors, such as The Raveonettes, add something new---their blunt-banged psychedelic rockabilly---to an already specialized genre.
