Pavement/Pixies tribute

It is a sad state of affairs when the biggest concert draw in this town (for local talent) is to put on a “tribute” show. Like this one — which featured members of the Jon Epworth Band, Montgomery Moth and the Dean Malenkos taking a stab at the Pixies and Pavement catalogue. But successful it was. Even if the show was modestly attended, the appreciative crowd (some donning the now too-common “Death to the Pixies” Ts) filled the dance floor, moshed and sang along as if this was the next best thing to seeing the bands in the flesh. For the first set Jon Epworth, Jay Vautour, Mike Holmes and Dan Jardine each took turns having fun with the Pavement material. The older songs (“Box Elder,” “Conduit For Sale”) worked best, with songs like “Shady Lane” sounding under-rehearsed. But hey, even Pavement was scrappy at times too. Montgomery Moth, along with Craig Hamlin from the Dean Malenkos, replete with his gold-top Gibson Les Paul, capped the evening with a truly convincing performance proving that they not only know the Pixies inside-and-out but bleed it from their pores.
