Mustaine

Dave Mustaine with Joe Layden (It Books)

This book is inaccurately subtitled A Heavy Metal Memoir. More appropriate would be A History of My Substance Abuse (and other stories). Mustaine is incredibly long on sex and drugs, and short on rock ’n’ roll ---Megadeth albums sadly provide a backdrop and timeline for depravity and failed rehab attempts. The narrative suffers from some truly bizarre leaps (wait, he’s dabbling in the occult now?) and clumsy writing, but the biggest fault with Mustaine is that it feels like a forced (read: desperate) apology. Even in his darkest moments, Mustaine undermines his own actions, although he is quick to take down any of his co-conspirators. As a result, the attempted born-again Christian crescendo comes off as more than a little suspect.
