Minus World

Thoughtful dance music

Minus World originally started out as a solo project, after singer/keyboardist Justin Wiles saw a Rich Aucoin show and realized that you don’t need a band---or even a guitar ---to write thoughtful, emotive dance music. However, he eventually decided he needed a drummer and enlisted Kat Williams on the kit. Their debut EP is deceptively complex ---each song features the whimsical chiming of Nintendo-inspired 8-bit synths and keytars, but they score songs that are built like pieces of a glam rock opera, with sweeping vocals, fluid song structures and a capella incantations. (The band is known for using a Nintendo DS to play backing tracks during live shows, which Wiles insists is due to portability rather than gimmickry.) It’s ambitious music for such a young band, but Wiles and Williams pull it off. The EP is currently on Bandcamp, and you can check out Wiles’ music collective, Berserker Lion, and all upcoming events at berserkerlion.com.
