Lazy record reviewers might compare Stuck on Nothing to Thin Lizzy. And they’re right, until they aren’t. Yes, Stuck might sound like classic rock, but more accurately, this is hyper-competent revisionist history. Produced by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, Free Energy’s debut is all Gary Glitter backbeats, three-note solos and pool-party pop bangers. In their words, the Philadelphia foursome’s days are spent “making out with the wind” while nights “bang and pop.” Like the opening third of Joel Plaskett’s Ashtray Rock, Free Energy’s debut captures the irreverence and excitement of a young band enjoying their ride---regardless of where they’re going. This isn’t Jailbreak, and it sure isn’t 1976. But Stuck might be the decade’s first true summer record---and in 2010, that sounds very, very good.
