When Jeremy Webb dreams a dream, big things happen.
The actor/director/producer/writer set out to bring a small, cabaret-style show to Neptune's main stage during its normally dark summer months. Instead, it became a full-scale musical.
Broadway on Argyle Street stars Webb and Martha Irving as two aging actors who return to the soon-to-be-demolished theatre where they first met and fell in love. Through theatre magic, they are able to see their younger selves (Jordan Bell and Dayna Tietzen) as they experience some of the highs and lows of their relationship.
"I'd been kicking around the idea for a show like this for awhile, but what's actually on stage came together really quickly. All the pieces fell into place," say Webb, explaining that the storyline was created out of Broadway musical pieces chosen by the cast, the show's director Cliff Le Jeune and musical director Lisa St. Clair.
"We'd email ideas back and forth...what people are seeing is Draft 13."
For Webb, the show is an opportunity to showcase some of his favourite songs from musicals like Les Misérables and The Producers. "My love of musicals started with Les Miz back in the '80s in the UK, so it was certain to make an appearance in this show."
Ticket sales have been brisk, proving that there is an appetite for more summer theatre in the city.
"There are lots of tourists in Halifax right now looking for fun things to do," says Webb. Broadway on Argyle fits the bill.
