Despite seeing almost 300 plays since I first attended 2b Theatre’s Invisible Atom four years ago, it stands out in my mind as one of the most memorable. Why? Because it’s a unique one-man show that’s intelligent, entertaining, beautifully staged and helmed by a terrific actor, Anthony Black. The tile character, Atom, is a stockbroker with a conscience, a man who is thrust to the brink of self-destruction by a tragic event. He is granted a moment in time to make sense of his own life, and the audience is granted a window into Atom’s fevered brain. It’s a real treat to watch Black shift effortlessly through a range of characters including a twisty, twisted salesman called Big Dan, Atom’s practical, long-suffering physicist wife and a philosophical Russian cab driver. This is a play that deals with serious, thought-provoking issues but uses a light, elegant hand and gentle humour. I suspect it will still be memorable four years from now.
