Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case

The Sun in Your Eyes (independent)

Fresh off winning the CBC Searchlight competition for new acts, Newfoundlander Downey justifies the kudos on his second album. He sings like your buddy. The Ambiguous Case is a spirited, mostly acoustic band that may remind you of sunny 1970s folk-rock hits like "Sweet City Woman." Banjo and trumpet get along beautifully on "Outta Your Mind" and a violin solo creates its own space on "Honey For Bees." Well-read and disarming, Downey can get away with a line like "Isadora Duncan, don't you wish you were a pumpkin?" "Heart vs. Doubt" is autobiographical, philosophical and a breezy two-stepper all in one. There's wisdom behind that folksy exterior.
