Sound Market Studio A café and all ages shows a go

Sound Market Studios on Quinpool Road is constructing a café and has already started booking all ages shows.

Starting this weekend along with the Halifax Pop Explosion, Sound Market Studios (6208 Quinpool Road, 492-4408) is opening a new performance space/café. Well, the café is still a little ways into the future, it probably won’t open with regular hours until closer to the new year. But the performance space is a go, with all-ages NoCase shows both Friday and Saturday night, featuring bands such as Broken Ohms and Deerfield. It’s called the Sound Market Studio A Café and it’s in the basement space that the studio business now occupies. “Right now we’re using it for one-off events,” says engineer and manager Rob Corrigan. “It’s roughly the size of Gus’ Pub, with a nice high ceiling.” Corrigan says the plan is to treat the space acoustically so they can rent it out for bands wanting to record live off the floor, with a snake, a multi-channel audio cable running into it. The café will join the 10 rehearsal studios already existing at Sound Market and The Ghosts of FM, a merchandise and custom silk-screening operation that’s just getting up and running. Corrigan envisions the café as a black box, a multi-use performance and art space, for music, film screenings, readings and open mic nights. “Everything that extends our space into the arts community,” he says. Keep an eye on Shoptalk for news on when the café opens officially, and The Coast listings for the all-ages shows happening down there.
