We’re all wondering what to do right now. Wondering what to say. (Remember that really, for non-Black folk, right now should be about listening.) Wondering how to be better.
A good place to start? Educate yourself. Give money if you can. And show up, as often as possible, for those more marginalized. Here’s three ways to do that:
1Make a plan to go to the Halifax #BlackLivesMatter vigil, happening June 5 at Grand Parade from 5-7pm. Remember to wear a face mask and keep social distance, and check out the Facebook event for more info.
2 Register to be part of EVERYSEEKER Festival‘s anti-oppression workshop. Held online on Wednesday, June 10 at 1pm, the workshop will help you learn how to be a better ally. Fill out your application form through EVERYSEEKER’s website.
3 Watch the forum on anti-Black racism, Speak Truth To Power, on June 5 from 6-7:30pm. Held via Zoom and put on by Dalhousie University’s Human Rights & Equity Services and the Black Faculty and Staff Caucus, you can tune in here.

Black Lives Matter candle vigil in Halifax, Friday June 5
WHEN: Fri. June 5 @ 5pm
WHERE: Parade Square, Halifax/K’jipuktuk
On June 5th, community members in Halifax will gather to honour the many names and voices lost to police brutality in Canada and worldwide.
“With our lit candles and our collective grief and rage, we stand in solidarity with other #BlackLivesMatter movements around the world,” reads the event description.
Organizers of the event are calling on attendees to practice physical distancing (ie. to wear facemasks) and be conscious of vulnerable members of the community during this time.
We would like to make it known that as a gesture of support to those Nova Scotians planning on heading to Parade Square in Halifax this afternoon Neptune Theatre will be opening its doors to allow its washrooms to be used.
We recognize that there are no open public washrooms in the downtown core. We also recognize that our neighbours opening bars and restaurants for the first time will likely find it hard to accommodate visits from folks looking to use a washroom at this time.
We will follow provincial physical distancing rules and would ask anyone needing to use the facilities to wear a mask and wash hands.
The doors will be open from 4.45pm to 7pm.
