I’m a wee bit sick of listening to people who rent bitch about their circumstances. Your landlord won’t let you have a dog? Boo hoo. The other tenants hog the laundry facilities? Cry me a river. You have to realize that when you live in someone else’s house, you have to abide by their rules. You want to be the boss? You want to let your three huge dogs piss on the carpet and chew the doorframes? You want to do laundry at your leisure? Start saving your pennies, and buy your own damn house. Until then, suck it up.

  1. Your a dummie! I am a homeowner as well and a person who has rented. Dont you think most people who rent would rather own. with the economy, job loss and tightened credit at the banks dont you think your being a bit of a cunt by telling people to save their penny’s and by a house. That seems like a comment made by a person that has never struggled and had probably been givven alot of what they have on a silver platter, maybe mom and dad co-signed, or even given you a down payment. Either way fuck off

  2. Actually Kernalbob, I’ve worked extremely hard for everything I have. Nothing has been handed to me on a silver platter. Nice try though.

I realize not everyone can afford to own. All I’m saying is that if you don’t want to work hard and save for your own place, stop bitching about having to live by someone else’s rules. When you have your own place, you can do whatever the hell you want.

And before you call someone a “dummie”, you might want to take a look at your own spelling and grammar skills.

  3. Oh boy! Petty name calling! Actually HH, KB is right. Due to the tightened credit situations of most Banks nowadays, you need to have at the very least a decent credit rating and no other collections on file (yes they will decline for a mortgage even if you have a disputed cell phone collection on file, I’ve seen it happen) , so it’s getting real tough to get a mortgage. It’s not as simple as getting a down payment anymore, unless you go to an unconventional lender where you’ll pay upwards of 7% on interest, and given house values today (average home in Halifax costs about 300K, I’m serious. Take a look at the MLS website) you need a household income of 75 K just to pass TDSR requirements, not to mention property taxes and such. You might want to do some of your own research before you call someone else uneducated, sir.

  4. Didnt realize this was a spelling bee, or a grammar competition. Calling you dummie was a little much, ill just go with asshole for now.

  5. Just a note…HALIFAX (the Penninsula) isn’t the only place where one can buy a home. My 65 ft by 120 ft lot with 3 bedroom home in Dartmouth used to set me back, just in taxes, 1400.00 a year.
I now live in the Enfeild area, & I have just over 2 acres & 340+ ft of it is on the Shubie river…I pay a couple of bucks over $200.00 for taxes. My mortgage is much cheaper & I took a chance on a variable rate at 1% over Prime, so I don’t have no 7 % interest mortgage either.
There are other options, & as a kid from Cape Breton who’s dad worked in the coal mines & mom worked at Woolco, we were not rich enough for them to give me anything either…But I did get a strong WORK ETHIC from them. Something that’s missing in most young people these days. I’ve worked hard for everything I own in this world & my credit rating was earned, not GIVEN to me !

As for the spelling Nazi’s, ignore them ; its all they’ve got in this life -kinda sad when you think about it.

  6. I’m not a spelling Nazi, I just thought it was ironic that someone who was calling me a “dummie” didn’t know the difference between “pennies” and “penny’s” and “given” and “given” etc.

A little like the pot calling the kettle black, no?

BTW, I didn’t mean to rag on people who rent versus own, I just wanted to point out that it’s completely reasonable to have to live by someone else’s rules when you’re living in their house. So enough of the whining about not being able to have a dog, having to share the laundry, etc. Suck it up. It’s part of paying someone else’s mortgage for them.

And, for the record, my mortgage, on a small but nice house in the north end, is $7 cheaper than my rent was in the west end.

  7. Actually, some of us renters would prefer NOT to own. My parents just sold their house and downsized into an apartment because they didn’t want the upkeep of a house (my mom always says, figure out your mortgage payment/month and double it and that’s what a house will cost you) or the cost. My dad’s retired and my mom’s got about 8 or so years left before she retires, so they decided to sell up, invest the profits (they made almost double what they paid for the house just 10 years ago!) and move into a really nice apartment. They’ve been living in their apartment for a year and couldn’t be happier. Mind you, they’re not renting your typical studenty type apartment. With their savings/income they live in one hell of an apartment, let me tell you (with MANY amenities), so they don’t have to deal with most of the shit your typical renter does.

When they were apartment hunting a lot of agents showing them places said they’re seeing a trend of older baby boomers selling their homes and renting as they retire/head into retirement.

SO no, not everyone wishes they could own 😛

I get your point though, OP, you don’t have carte blanche when it comes to rentals, but for those among us renters who wishes they could own you’re kind of rubbing it in their faces. Hard work is fine, but A LOT of people’s success is luck. i know people who work their asses off and have barely anything…

  8. tsk tsk can’t we all play nice?

Bit of a callous attitude though I say. Not everyone can afford one. Yup, most of us had to go through the shitty times of having a landlord..and oh boy my husband and I had a couple of douzies, but don’t you tell me to suck it up. Landlords get away with too much and it’s fucking unfair, and ofttimes illegal what we put up with. Dick.

  9. I guess I’m not making my point clearly. I know not everyone can afford to own, or wants to own, for that matter. To each their own. All I’m saying is, if you choose to live in someone else’s house, no matter what the circumstance, you have to live by their rules. As the owner of the building, they get to set the rules. So stop complaining. If you want/have to rent, suck it up. If you want the big dogs and laundry facilities all to yourself, then buy.

  10. Kelley Belly: landlords certainly DO think they can get away with whatever they want. Last time I was apartment hunting one particular landlord tried to get me to sign an agreement in order for my application to be even considered that said I agree to a bunch of shit that goes against the residential tenancies act. The one that REALLLLLLY pissed me off is the “when you’re on month to month after one year you have to give 2 months notice to vacate”….uh no. And the application itself was so detailed that I’m surprised they didn’t ask me when I took a shit last. And I had to agree to pay to clean the pavement if there were oil stains in my parking spot. *eyeroll*

The apartments weren’t anything special either and had a god awful view of the highway and BLIP. good grief.

  11. HH: I rent and I have laundry facilities allll to myself.

Not all of us renters live in shit shacks, you know, and not all of us renters are beneath you because you own a fucking house. I’ve seen A LOT of houses that don’t even compare to the apartment I rent or especially the one my parents rent.

  12. I just don’t like fixing stuff. Well, that and I’m not really sure how to in most cases when it comes to appliances.
Let them worry about replacing a defective stove or toilet or fridge or windows with a draft, etc…
It seems every place I move to, something has to be replaced… not that I break it. It’s that the previous tenant likely lived there a while and it’s just ‘almost’ useless but they pass it in the inspection and I get stuck with it. Fork that.

  13. HH, I think the point is that a lot of the renters you refer to are not CHOOSING to be renters, they have no other choice because they cannot afford a house. If it were a CHOICE, then sure yell at them for expecting too much when they’re choosing to live under someone elses terms. But when the housing markets and banks dictate than anyone working min wage will never be given the time of day by a mortgage lender, you cannot yell at everyone saying that they have to deal because they CHOSE to live that way.
