This little-known spot for research is the ultimate quiet corner in the city. Located on the corner of University Avenue and Robie Street, it’s a great alternative space that’s convenient for Dal and SMU students. Membership is free and the building has reading rooms in the upper floors equipped with free wifi. If you’re looking for no distractions, this is the place for you. 6016 University Avenue

Public Gardens
Reading long chapters in your textbooks may be easier with a more uplifting setting than the stacks, so why not enjoy the beautiful scenery in the Public Gardens? The park has plenty of benches and is generally free of crowds in the late afternoons. Grab a cup of coffee from Uncommon Grounds or an ice cream cone from Sugah! in the historic Horticultural Hall and get down to business. The park closes at dusk. Point Pleasant Park
How about curling up with your textbook in the woods? This expansive park is more than jogging grounds for active runners—the picnic tables by the shore are a good place to settle in or find a quiet spot with the grass. With no places to plug in, Point Pleasant’s also a good place for students who need a break from Buzzfeed. 5718 Point Pleasant Drive

Lion & Bright
Need an early morning coffee or a late-night snack? Lion & Bright provides the friendly atmosphere of a community coffee shop, complete with huge communal tables perfect for spreading out all that team work. The new cafe and wine bar is perfect for early birds and late night owls, opening at 7am and closing between 1 and 2 am, though let’s be real—at that hour you won’t be getting much work done. 2534 Agricola Street

Two If By Sea
Need to meet up in a central location? Two If By Sea has one of those on either side of the waterfront, both of which offer study space, free wifi and the potential to carb load. The Halifax location (at Historic Properties) shares an open seating area with its neighbour Subway; hang here mid-morning or late afternoon to beat the rush. If the Dartmouth location’s packed, check upstairs for more private seating.
