Why the F can’t I get a decent apartment? Well, I know why. Because I’m 19. I completely understand that landlords don’t want to rent out to a youngin’, because of noise and drunken escapades. I’m not really angry at the LLs for that, more so at the idiot young people that ruin it for the rest.

I have a good paying full-time job, excellent co-signer, a good chunk of money in the bank and a car. I applied for this one apartment and was told they don’t even accept co-signs. This other one told me while I was looking at the place, that they don’t “really” rent to 19-year-olds because I don’t fit the “criteria” (even though he had no information on me except for my name, age and sex) and want to keep the apartment quiet. This place was currently occupied by students who play guitar and a family with a young child and baby on the way.

I am willing to and have to means to dish out more money for a nicer place in a good location, but it looks like the only places that will take a young person like me is somewhere in Highfield, dirty parts of Dartmouth and sketchy north end Halifax. Oh, there’s plenty of “rooms” for rent and people who want to sublet from April to August that I’m sure would take me but I can afford a whole apartment and would like to live there for more than five months. I’m pretty sure they can’t discriminate against me because of my age when I meet the requirements, and have an excellent co-signer for a guarantee.

Screw you, young people that screwed it for me. —Melectric

  1. Keep at it. Me and my roommate looked for an apartment for 5 months before we found a place in “sketchy north end Halifax”, which is exactly where we wanted to live.

  2. Wow – this flies in the face of what happened to my youngest who is also 19 – she was offererd the first place she looked at last month. Try mainland Halifax (as my kid did) or Clayton Park.

  3. central halifax/quinpool area is a sweet place to live, and i know several 19 year olds who live in the area. i was 21 when i got my first apartment there and it’s a wicked neighbourhood. good luck!

  4. melectric, i can supply you with a number if you wish. the building is fairly quiet, there are mostly adults here, but there are kids too. very young kids, as in toddlers or less. it is clean, the owner fixes stuff that needs to be done from time to time, and is a pretty decennt guy. i havebeen here going on 6 years now, and have had verry, verry few problems with other tenants. this is in fairview, close to at least 5 bus routes if needed. the rent is 600 bucks monthly, and you pay own cable and lights. if you need number, contact me, and i will give it to you.

  5. I find it ironic that landlords will turn down a 19 year old, but the banks/lawyers will let a 21 year old sign off on a house/mortgage :s

  6. Banks will get their $$$ regardless. A landlord may not – or will pay extra fixing the place after the 19 year old moves out.

  7. in a university city, there has to be places that would rent to a 19 year old…
what was that post? rentdonkey.ca for places in halifax…
    have a quick scan.
and if you don’t stay in a place right near a university you may have better chances, they know all too well and are constantly reminded why youngin’s ruin it for everyone else.
I stay near both and want the hell out.

  8. I suggest the OP gets a life and starts partying like the rest of the 19 year olds out there.

  9. sorry badguy, melectric is a sensible young lady that posts on here sometimes. and i must admit is one of the very few i actually am nice to.

  10. if we had more room you could bunk with us
cats/dogs/birds allowed^^i will look into it

  11. Not everywhere in Dartmouth is sketchy. There are many buildings along Windmill that are not at all bad if you can put up with the odd train. If you’ve got a bit more money, the Mic Mac area is a good place to live too. Good luck.

  12. #1 Why the hell are you apologizing to me?
#2 Plastic Diver Guy, you stole my facebook pic. Except mine is better, I put my face in the Dr. Wile spot. I guess you will always be two steps behind me.

  13. If you are having that much of a problem (I never did) then maybe you are not presenting yourself as well as you thought. Dress like you are going to an interview and have references ready.

  14. “”#1 Why the hell are you apologizing to me?”

Maybe it’s your oh so scary wrestling avatar?

  15. Thanks for the advice everyone :)! I just applied for one yesterday and the landlady seems decent so I’ll cross my fingers :D.

@LIFE SUCKS > thanks for the offer but I don’t think I could find a lock strong enough for my door….jkjk. And I hate children, especially toddlers. The place I applied for is in Fairview, right by my work. Well it’s on Windsor st near the exchange, I dunno if that’s considered FV.

@TheBadGuy > I did all my partying when I was 14-17, thanks :D. I’m not saying I don’t ever get drunk, I just wouldn’t use my own apartment as a party house.

There are many places in the areas people have mentioned, I do like the Quinpool area, but I mostly only found rooms for rent, and I pretty much have OCD when it comes to how I keep my places. I have lived with my slob of a brother and have stayed with borderline hoarder friend a few times, to know that I would probably end up murdering someone if I had to live with them.
And I do present myself well, I dress nice each day for no particular reason, just incase, for reasons like looking at an apartment!

Thanks all <3...well, most of you.

  16. I live in the north end of Halifax and I love it. Don’t be a snot. You might find a nice cheap apartment, ya dink.

  17. Windsor street? Thats pretty much the north end. haha. The so called “sketchy place you didn’t want to be.

  18. Halifax being a small city, 10 feet can make a difference. My friend lived on Maynard street and it was awful. The whole place smelled like cat piss and there were bums outside. Now, you go down the street towards the commons and it’s nice. And when I said “sketchy North End”, I meant the sketchy part in the North end, not the whole north end.
One ex of mine lived in Highfield and there were at least 4 times when someone harrassed me in the hallway or outside the building, calling me a bitch, slut, or whatever they felt like for no reason, so sorry if I would like to prevent such things from happening again in a place that I have to stay every day.

  19. That’s like everyone says Gaston Rd is soooo bad (it’s really not), but then Regency is a decent place

  20. melectric, you don’t need strong locks on your door here, matter of fact, most of the people here, hardly ever lock their doors, even at night. it is a thing we have in this building called unity, and the kids are not that old as to run screaming in the halls. they are decent, because the parents are decent, and care about where they live. i have been here 6 years, and love it. we are almost like one big family here, young and older. i am not in the badder part of fairview. you can have pets here, as long as they don’t destroy anything, or making a bunch of noise. i love this place, and don’t intend to move, ever. and if somebody did come and start any kind of shit, then they have me, an ex military cop, to deal with.

  21. dress up like a girl and bat you’re eyes and act all helpless and say could you help me and my swedish stewardess friends move our stuff in; we’ll be VERY appreciative 🙂

  22. I totally understand. I’m 24 work full time in the health care industry and still had a landlord tell me he would not rent to me because her son is 21 and she knows what ALL 20 somethings are like.

I obviously called him out on ageism and forward complaints to my MLA, Municiple counsellor, & the human rights comission.

Now myself and my fiance live in a amazing flat. Don’t give up!

  23. It’s against tenants rights to not accept someone regarding their age. If a landlord is attempting to do that, remind them they can’t.
