Honestly, it’s really hard in this city to find groups and like-minded people who want to explore spirituality but, charging $200 to teach someone how to ground themselves and $15 for a meditation session, is the most dishonest thing I have ever encountered, and I should not just complain but be active within the community to change things, but really trying to make an easy buck on somebody’s naive first attempts at exploring spirituality!
Really!! Come on, guys! —Anon

  1. But it’s, like totally the , you know… thing to do. You totally need someone to show you how to be spiritual… because it’s like so obvious you don’t have a spirit to begin with.
    Like duh…
    ya know…

    idiot.

  2. cooker.. your grammar is bad and you should feel bad. Your stuffing better be delicious 🙂

Look op. Find an online resource for learning yoga. Any idiot can learn yoga online. I study martial arts (taiji chen and kung fu) and my sifu doesn’t charge nearly that much! He also knows yoga and says if i ever want to learn, you go once or twice to get the basics and then it’s just having the personal drive to do it daily on your own.

Why not find a reputable teacher and ask for videos? Or a reputable site online and do the same?

or do taiji? Better than yoga.

  3. the reality is that yoga is trendy so they can justify charging a lot of money for training and moronic trendoids will continue to pay it and think they’re getting something of value.

You have bought into a trendy activity. What did you expect? If your reasons for wanting to do it are truly centered around cultivation, there are ways to avoid the reams of glazed-eyed hipsters and learn on your own or one-on-one with a decent yogi.

But if your reasons for wanting to do it are centered around hanging out in a studio with a bunch of other lululemon clad elitist suckers to see who spent the most on their gear and who can look the best, then you deserve what you get.

Not saying you’re one or the other. Merely giving you a reality check.

  4. OP – cults exist for the primary purpose of separating simpletons from their money, and even in these tough economic times, business is bopoming. You could complain to the BBB(there won’t be a dry seat in the place) or shove burning dhoop sticks up your gloryhole for all the good it will do.

  5. You want grounded?
Spend bus fare and go to a food shelter.
Some of them are so grounded, that’s where they sleep.

  6. A purveyor of New Age leftie bullshit trying to scam people? Why I never! 😛

  7. “the reality is that yoga is trendy so they can justify charging a lot of money for training and moronic trendoids will continue to pay it and think they’re getting something of value. “

Says the chick who pointed out she is learning near useless martial arts that exploded into popularity due to martial arts films. Your shitfu should probably beat you with a stick for attempting to discredit an activity that is based purely around fitness and well being.

hurr durr another useless comment from our resident hipster eats_crayons

  8. So what you’re saying, OB, is that you’re too cheap to shell out the bucks for yoga and expect instructors to spend their TIME teaching you how to hang your ass up in the air for free?

HAHA. Google it if you’re that cheap.

  9. Ultimately there are a lot of people with passions who want his or her passion to be the profession. They have to make a living and they will lie to themselves as far as they can take it to continue to “work” as an instructor. Life gets more expensive and so do they. That was decades ago. Now there is a “standard price” that is dictated by what has been rationalized as what the activity+training is “worth”. Have you ever seen those motivational speakers who talk about “how much you are actually worth” in terms of dollars.

You see how money brainwashed people are, of course they’re going to take as much as they can get. If there are always buyers they’ll get it. This is where the internet becomes a beautiful thing.

Oh and guess what, in North America the manufacturing sector has steeply fallen allowing Asia to take it over. So were you sold the “American dream”.

I work, sometimes outside for long hours in the winter. That is my political statement.

  10. Don’t you hate taking up the ass while trying to do your Downward Dog?
Just bring your focus to centre OP, just concentrate on your breathing, tighten the core, grab your mouse and check out yoga positions online. Maybe some university facilities offer yoga. Deep breath, slow exhale. Namaste!

  11. GROUNDING ONESELF

“… but charging $200 to teach someone how to ground themselves and $15 for a meditation session, is the most dishonest thing I have ever encountered..” Anon.

But why is it dishonest, Anon? Of course, if you think yoga and meditation are just empty exercises, then charging anything would be dishonest, wouldn’t it, Anon? Assuming you doesn’t think this Anon – you think that there might be some value in yoga and meditation, what would you think would be a fair price? Better yet, will you give us some calculus to determine their monetary value? Is there a sliding scale Anon? How much would be the right price?

This of course, can be attempted only you know and can explain what the phrase “grounding oneself” means. What does it mean, Anon? Can you explain that to us? You do understand that your claim that charging $200 to teach someone yoga and $15 for a meditation session is the most dishonest thing you have ever encountered requires that you do this. You do understand that Anon, don’t you? You know what they call people who, quite literally, don’t know what they’re talking about, don’t you Anon? You don’t want that, do you Anon.

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  12. Hey OP, the Shambala Center on Tower Rd (dunno if it’s still there) used to do Wed eve meditation sessions for beginners for free–ya might wanna give ’em a call to see if they still do that…and there was a Dal psych prof who used to do free weekly meditation sessions as well(dennis phillips); Deepak Chopra has a really good book on yoga(look up: 7 spiritual steps of yoga)…there are a variety of relatively cheap yoga position books~25 dollars or less and no ‘take it up the ass positions’ (lol), at many local bookstores as well…you can also try to find the cd “Yoga With Robert Without Robert”, it was made by a local fellow (who may still be around),it is for ‘experienced beginners’, and it is a really good and clear yoga session (runs about 80 min)….just some food for thought;)

  13. CORRECTION: “Grounding Oneself”

    line 3: “don’t” for “doesn’t” (External distraction)

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  14. I liked it when you left it at ‘HOE’ Blow…..funnyfunny–and I really needed a laugh today, so thanks man;)
